Hendi Saputra In September 2026, two Indonesians sat at the table that decides the world's best steak. At the World Steak Challenge in Amsterdam, Chef Teuku Wahyudi Amrizal of Meatguy Steakhouse, known as "El Patrón", and Dimas Ramadhan Pangestu (Dimsthemeatguy) served as the only judges from Asia. It was a historic moment for Indonesian steak. Here is the story of that competition, its champions, and what it means for the steak on your plate at Meatguy Steakhouse.
The World Steak Challenge is an annual competition that judges the quality of steak from farmers and producers around the world. What makes it credible is its method: blind judging. Every sample is given a code, and the judges do not know the brand, the producer, or the country of origin of the meat they taste. Judging is carried out in several independent rounds, based purely on the quality of the meat itself: marbling, texture, aroma, and flavor.
The result is more than just a title. For producers, a medal here is the highest recognition. For the culinary world, the list of winners becomes the reference for who truly leads the standard of taste.
The 2026 edition was held in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The judging day took place at the renowned steakhouse Vlees & Co, and the awards night was held at Hotel Arena on 10 September 2026.
The numbers were big. A total of 328 medals were awarded this year, consisting of 128 gold, 114 silver, and 86 bronze. Ireland emerged as the top-performing country with a record 82 medals, while Australia dominated the wagyu category.
The highest title, World's Best Steak 2026, went to the Senku Pure Wagyu Fillet from producer Paradigm Foods in Queensland, Australia. This steak also claimed the World's Best Grain-Fed Fillet and Oceania's Best Steak titles before being crowned overall champion. It is proof that Australian wagyu now stands shoulder to shoulder with the very best in the world.
This is what makes 2026 historic for us. Chef Teuku Wahyudi Amrizal, Executive Chef of Meatguy Steakhouse known as "El Patrón", together with Dimas Ramadhan Pangestu (Dimsthemeatguy), served as judges at the World Steak Challenge 2026.
And they were not merely present. The two were the only judges from Asia on the panel that year, making them representatives of both Indonesia and Asia in determining the world's best steak.
This was no fleeting coincidence. Dims has been recorded as the first judge from Indonesia since the World Steak Challenge 2024, and that trust continued through 2025 and 2026. It is a recognition of the depth of their expertise, and a sign that Indonesia's palate and judgment are now considered worthy of helping define the world standard.
Achievement at the judging table goes hand in hand with recognition for their own home. In 2025, Meatguy Steakhouse entered the World's 101 Best Steak Restaurants at number 90, the first Indonesian steakhouse ever recorded on that prestigious list, alongside legendary names from New York to Tokyo.
When a chef and a meat expert sit down to judge hundreds of the world's best steaks, they bring home more than just a title. They bring home a standard. That standard is what is then applied in the kitchen of Meatguy Steakhouse, from meat selection to dry-aging technique.
And the best news: some of the winning cuts from the World Steak Challenge 2026 can now be tasted directly in Jakarta. (We break down the champion cuts in full in our article Champion Cuts of the World Steak Challenge 2026 at Meatguy.
